Sexually transmitted infections - a guide for seafarers
Seafarers should protect themselves against sexually transmitted infections when travelling.
A large proportion of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occur as a result of unprotected sexual intercourse during international travel. As international travellers, seafarers are at increased risk of contracting STIs.
STIs are a major cause of acute illness, infertility, long term disability and death with severe medical and psychological consequences for millions of men, women and children. The presence of an untreated STI can increase the risk of becoming infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus, causing AIDS).
This guide encourages seafarers to look after their own sexual health. It provides information on the symptoms and treatment of common STIs, as well as HIV/AIDS, and the precautions seafarers should take.
