National Seafarers' Welfare Board of Nigeria

Nswb logo

NSWB seeks to address welfare needs of seafarers by ensuring compliance with international standards and regulations on seafarers' welfare. Seafarers are offered assistance in matters of welfare, training and employment.

The National Seafarers' Welfare Board of Nigeria (NSWB) seeks to attend to the welfare needs of seafarers. NSWB also seeks the development of the maritime industry. This is achieved by ensuring compliance with international standards on seafarers' welfare. Similarly, seafarers are offered required assistance in matters relating to welfare, training and development.

NSWB works with seafarer unions such as the Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA), government agencies and many other industry stakeholders to achieve its aims and objectives.

We constantly strive to ensure that seafarers not only have decent working conditions, but that they are treated fairly without discrimination, abuse, harassment and/or exploitation.

Functions of the Board include: The promotion and support of training programmes for seafarers to ensure upskilling and reskilling. The provision of support and assistance to seafarers and their families when needed (such as legal advice, repatriation, medical care, among others). The monitoring and facilitation of compliance efforts with both national and international Standards and Regulations. Creation of employment opportunities and relating with all stakeholders to ensure that seafarers' welfare needs are adequately addressed.
